Bubblebee Aero Pro

Wind protection, rethought.

Six ideas

Built around the noise that always crept in.

After years of booming, Poul Mejer designed the blimp he always wanted on set: one that keeps cable and handling noise away from the mic, and comes off the boom in a single movement.

  1. 01

    Quick release

Off the boom in one movement.

The basket comes off with the microphone inside and leaves the pole and any transmitter rigged. Put on a second basket with a different mic, and a last-minute change of pickup pattern becomes a quick twist instead of unscrewing and screwing.

The same joint splits the cable, so cable noise doesn't travel to the mic. Pogo pins carry the audio signal, and a rubber absorber takes out handling noise from the boom or stand.

  2. 02

    Suspension hoops

    Our patent-pending suspension.

The suspension holds the mic in rubber holders adapted for different microphone diameters, colour-coded for different hoop stiffness. They sit on a carbon-fibre rail that makes it easy to adjust where each hoop sits, so every microphone can be balanced perfectly.

  3. 03

    Aerodynamic cage

    Wider than it is tall.

Wind on a boom usually arrives from the side, where the diaphragm needs protecting. So the cage is wide and low, shaped for better aerodynamics and better wind protection.

In strong wind the low profile gives a smoother airflow over the blimp, and it packs away easily.

  4. 04

    Fur and spacer fabric

    Fur is where we started.

Every Aero Pro comes with a spacer fabric cover and our signature fur wind jacket for maximum wind protection.

Fur is how Bubblebee began. Before a documentary job on a boat, Poul bought every kind of fur the shop had and spent the downtime on deck building and testing. By the end of the trip, the first Windbubble was settled.

  5. 05

    Sizes up to 28 cm

    XS, S and M.

Three sizes for shotgun mics up to 28 cm long: XS for mics up to 8 cm, S up to 18 cm and M up to 28 cm.

The XS keeps small capsules well protected in a rig that draws less attention.

In documentary, you should be there, but not be seen.
  6. 06

    Modular build

    Modularity of the design.

We have designed the parts so that they are easy to adjust and interchange in the field. Any upgrades or replacements of separate parts can be done swiftly and with the help of our extensive network of dealers and distributors, hassle-free.

It splits up for big jobs too. On a football broadcast with 10 or more pitch-side mics, the delicate, expensive parts can travel in one case and the stands in another.

The idea

Everything starts with: what would I love to have?
Poul Mejer, founder of Bubblebee Industries

Poul spent years recording sound for documentaries and reality TV in Denmark before he founded Bubblebee Industries. The Aero Pro starts where every Bubblebee product starts: with the kit he always wanted on set.

His rule for every product is simple: “If we can't make the product better, then we won't make it.” Get the physics right, make it look good, and add as little as possible.
