I’ve been searching for the best wind protection for my Sony PCM-D100. Over the past few months I’ve tried just about every model from the leading manufacturers, along with a few lesser-known options. After running a series of side-by-side tests, the Bubblebee Windkiller SE consistently came out on top.

The other windshields were either less effective or allowed a small amount of low-frequency wind rumble to reach the microphones, resulting in more clean-up work during post-production. In contrast, the Bubblebee offered the best overall protection while maintaining excellent sound quality.

It’s beautifully made, with a high-quality outer fur and a well-designed inner lining. It’s also very easy to fit and remove from the D100, which is a real advantage when you’re out in the field.

I also use the Bubblebee Windkiller SE on my Sony PCM-M10, and it performs just as impressively.

Paired with the original Zoom foam windscreen it handle really well the legendary winds in Iceland! Great product!

I have used through the years some of the branded furs for portables trying to achieve something useful regarding the wind protection. Even the rycote ones failed! Bubblebee was the last fur until I was going to give up. I've watched some very good sound recordists in instagram using it but I wanted to test it my own. And I was amazed! I used the Xlarge one with my H6 Studio. With a combination of high pass filter you can't notice that there was any wind in the recording.

I got this specifically for a Tascam DR-40X after trying several other unsatisfactory products from other vendors. Size was also going to be an issue, and while it is easy to mount, the interior size is a little cramped and it is necessary to manipulate the mikes into a true A/B config after you put it on by literally pushing them outwards through the fur. But it can be done, and while not capable of blocking wind noise 100% it did a much better job that the competition while retaining higher sound frequencies.

Thanks for your order and thoughtful feedback, Derek! We’re glad the Windkiller has helped, and we appreciate you sharing your experience with the fit on your recorder.

Best regards,
Bubblebee Team

FAQs

Please read our FAQs page to find out more.

What is The Windkiller SE?

The Windkiller SE (Special Edition) is a fur windshield designed for specific devices like portable recorders, headset mics, and specialized equipment. It uses multi-pile faux fur to block wind while preserving natural sound quality.

How do I know if it fits my device?

Each Windkiller SE is designed for specific equipment. Check the product title and description to confirm compatibility with your device. If you're unsure, contact us and we'll help you find the right fit.

How does The Windkiller SE attach?

Depending on the model, The Windkiller SE uses either an elastic drawstring system or a slip-on rubber base that grips securely. Both designs are easy to attach and stay firmly in place during use.

What sizes or variants are available?

The Windkiller SE comes in different configurations designed for specific equipment. Check the product variants or browse our full Windkiller SE range to find the version that fits your device.

Does it affect recording quality?

No. The fur blocks wind noise while allowing sound to pass through naturally. Your recordings will sound clear without the muffling that foam covers can cause.

Is this better than a foam windscreen?

Yes. Fur windshields provide significantly better wind protection than foam. If you're recording outdoors regularly, the Windkiller SE will make a noticeable difference.

What applications is it best for?

The Windkiller SE is ideal for outdoor recording, broadcast, ENG, film production, podcasting, and any situation where you need clean audio in windy conditions.

How do I care for The Windkiller SE?

If the fur gets compressed or wet, let it dry fully, then shake it by hand so the fur stands up again. Store loosely without compressing.
